#Brocade san switch vsan series#
In order to use Inter VSAN Routing (IVR) you need IVR capable switches, like the MDS 92xx series, 95xx series or 97xx series OR the new MDS 9148(S) switches and with the 91 going EOL now ALL Cisco MDS switches can be made IVR capable by adding the right license. And of course communication between the remote sites is interrupted, but the indoor VSANs / fabrics remain unchanged. If some farmer with his tractor rips your single mode fiber, only the outdoor VSAN will be fractured and the indoor VSANs remain unharmed. If you need to have 2 EMC VNX storage arrays “talk” to each other for MirrorView for example over 2 or more datacenters (for data replication purposes that is) or hosts in one DC talk to storage in another DC, using transit VSANs (and therefore IVR) will keep your VSANs with equipment indoors and the slightly more vulnerable VSAN outdoors. To allow storage arrays and / or hosts in different VSANs to communicate with each other Inter VSAN Routing needs to be used. It’s a bit different….If you have multiple datacenters or a multi tenant fibre channel environment and you’re using Cisco FC switches, it’s a best practice to use VSANs to separate the configurations of each location / tenant. Next post is a separate post about the configupload and configdownload command in a Virtual Fabric environment. Ok these are some basic configuration steps. When you login using Web Tools GUI, you’ll be able to zone each fabric individually. The “fabricshow” command will output two switches in each fabric, depending on the cli context you’re in. When done right, you’ll have 4 Fabrics on your switches: One default, one base, and two normal logical switches. When you physically connect the 5300 switches (port 6 on the first switch to port 8 on the second) fabric merges for fabrics with the same FIDs start to happen, just as they normally would when not using VF. I don’t think i have to write up the commands for the second switch, you’ll get it ? Step 3, Connect the (X)ISL Above config follows the picture earlier in this post. The logical switches dont have to have the same port assignment configuration. FID8:admin> lscfg -create 1Īfter setting up my first 5300 switch, the second one can be setup in the same way.
It does not really matter in which context you create the switches, as long you have permissions to do so. I’m working with a 5300, so i’m limited to 4 logical switches at time of writing this.īesides the base switche and the default switch, i can create two more logical switches on the 5300. The number of logical switches you can create depends on the platform you use.
It’s also possible to change the name of the logical switch, a base switch in this case: FID8:admin>switchname baseswitch Step 3, create the logical switches Please enable your ports/switch when you are ready to continue. This operation requires that the affected ports be disabled. Port 6 for example, as shown in the figure above. Lets also switch context to FID8 when configuring the ports for the base switch by FID128:admin>setcontext 8Ĭonfigure the port for the base switch. Please configure the Logical Switch with appropriate switchĪnd protocol settings before activating the Logical Switch.įID 8 is created, so let’s assign some ports. Logical Switch has been created with default configurations. Logical Switch with FID (8) has been successfully created. FID128:admin> lscfg -create 8 -baseĬreation of a base switch requires that the proposed new base switch on this system be disabled.Ībout to create switch with fid=8.
You can see in which FID context you currently are in the identifier in front of your username. Notice we’ve got a default fabric 128 after enabling VF. WARNING: This is a disruptive operation that requires a reboot to take effect.Īll EX ports will be disabled upon reboot.
Warning though!! The switch will reboot immediately after hitting “Y” admin> fosconfig -enable vf ISNS client service: Service not supported on this PlatformĮthernet Switch Service: Service not supported on this Platform ISCSI service: Service not supported on this Platform I read in the manual, VF would be enabled by default. Only ISL ports can be configured in the base switches.
